Umbrella Coverage
Umbrella Coverage Information
What is umbrella insurance?
Umbrella insurance provides an extra layer of liability protection for your assets and earnings. Accidents happen. This is why we have insurance. However, if you aren't protected by an umbrella policy, you could be putting your home, financial assets or business at risk. This policy increases your overall liability coverage beyond the basic coverage provided under your homeowners, auto or commercial insurance policies. It is designed to protect you and your family/business against a catastrophic lawsuit or judgment. Once the liability limits are exhausted on your main insurance policy, your umbrella policy takes over and provides a second layer of protection.
Do I need umbrella insurance?
You might if you own a home, own a car, own a business, want to protect your future earnings or want to protect your assets against a lawsuit or judgment.
What is the difference between Personal Umbrella Policy and a Commercial Umbrella Policy?
Personal Umbrella Policy (PUP) - Imagine what would happen if your dog was to bite a neighbor's child, or if there was an accident on your rental property. What would happen if a fire in your condo spread to other units? If any of these things happen to you, there's a good chance your current liability limits wouldn't be adequate to protect your assets, or your future earnings. Once the liability limits are exhausted on your home, auto, or other policy, your umbrella policy takes over and provides a second layer of protection of at least $1,000,000. An umbrella insurance policy also pays some claims not covered by your home, auto, or other underlying insurance. The policy covers not just you, but your spouse and all family members living in your household, anywhere in the world. Legal defense fees are also paid.
Commercial Umbrella Policy (CUP) - An umbrella policy can mean the difference between a business surviving, or not. The rising costs of lawsuits and judgments are important for today's business owner to consider. The time and effort you have taken to build your business is too important for it to disappear after one unforeseen event. If you own a business you may need higher limits if you have a high loss potential, high profile, sizable sales, numerous assets, large auto fleets, worldwide presence, and/or significant public exposure.
